The Japanese word kawaii translated as cute or adorable, characterizes a segment of Japanese popular culture. Designers and artists draw inspiration from its aesthetic, while some young people practise it prolifically often gathering in groups, at favoured spots like Harajuku in Tokyo, to exchange fun ideas of their personal style statements

FITNESS FOREVER SERIES AT IIC, New Delhi

“Fitness Forever” - the inspiration for this series of talks/workshops/discussions is good ole Covid !
How a miniscule germ that can be annihilated by the simple soap has brought all of humanity to our knees – or many of us to our graves. How helpless we feel, flapping around, confused, defeated

While not much can be said or done in the face of the fury of nature
What IS in our hands - the least we can do - is take care of ourselves, OURSELVES
Our body is a gift of nature as the Buddhists say “precious human life”

Rather than fall prey to diseases how can we built up the strength, the immunity to shun diseases and follow the maxim “Prevention is better than cure”

The Fitness Forever series will encompass how to take care of body and mind based on the four pillars of good nutrition, sufficient exercise, remaining stress-free and good sleep. A variety of speakers will guide us to be stress free, how to be happy, how to laugh, how to learn to enjoy this “precious human life”, by focusing on making good health and building a strong immunity to be disease free, an integral part of our lifestyle.

IIC’s director Mr. K. N. Shrivastava has very kindly given the go ahead for this series.

A DANCER NEVER GETS OLD
Lecture-demonstration by Saswati Sen, well-known Kathak dancer, Guru & Choreographer, Secretary, Kalashram School of Dance & Performing Arts

Moderator: Dr Anu Jindal

Seminar Rooms II & III, Kamaladevi Complex at 18:00

India International Centre, New Delhi

Vidushi Saswati Sen is one of the senior most classical dancers today, acclaimed nationally and globally. Prime disciple of the legendary Pandi Birju Maharaj, she has been feted with numerous awards including by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the Sanskriti Award and the Shringar Mani Award. Displaying immense talent as a young dancr in a cameo in Satyajit Ray's film "Shatranj ke Khilari", Saswati has since achieved many milestones thrugh her versatility and flair for abhinay. She continues the tradition of the Gurukul parampara through the Kalashram Institute, founded by Pandit Birju Maharaj. Saswati will share from her vast experience to enlighten how dance is therapeutic both for the dancer and the viewer. For a dancer – the physique, the stance, the posture, the breathing techniques akin to yogic pranayama, accompanied with music, the rhythm of time, the expressiveness through abhinay, all help in developing one's own identity and leads towards spirituality. Dance improves muscular strength and aids in increased coordination and mobility, and the experience of dance helps with emotional and cognitive fitness.

FITNESS FOREVER second event - Illustrated talk on 30 March 2022 at IIC, New Delhi

"The Soil’s Health is our Health : Why Organic Farming is vital for health of the planet and people"

by Dr Vandana Shiva, founder Navdanya

Moderator: Dr Anu Jindal

Our health and the health of the planet is one health. It is connected to the health of the soil, seeds and plants we grow, the food we eat, the insects and microbes on which we depend, the water and the climate which sustain life. Our health begins in healthy soils, that are living systems. Doctors are increasingly finding that the roots of multiple chronic diseases lie in the health of the gut microbiome, which is connected to the health of soil biodiversity. The soil, the gut and our brain are one interconnected biome- violence to one part triggers violence in the entire interrelated system.
Chemically produced food has far less nutritional content, however regenerative organic agriculture increases nutritional content of food. Our bodies are not machines, food is not fuel to run the machine. Food is living, and eating is not a mechanical act, but the most significant act - a spiritual act, an ecological act, an agricultural act.
Health begins in food - Annam Sarvaushadhi Let Food be thy medicine.

“URMILA – ENCHANTED MOTHER”
A Virtual Exhibition of Artworks    4-17 January 2021

Curatorial Note

Adversity encourages innovation; pain draws out hitherto untapped emotions. Humanity today is in the stranglehold of the Covid-19 pandemic. Physically forced into insular lives, virtual connections have intensified. Thus struck, creativity continues unabated donning new avatars. This exhibition’s theme of mother and associated sentiments, sprung from the loss of my mother a year ago. Artworks of ten artists from around the globe are in varied genre and media.

Nils-Udo’s site specific installations celebrate nature by “drawing with flowers, painting with clouds, writing with water”. In urban spaces or deep womb of forests, he conjures up a wishful habitat, unblemished by humans. Himmat Shah, follows his maxim “do or die” in a fiery, unquenched quest. Wondrous as a child’s birth, creations originate from humble clay – his ultimate material. Rameshwar Broota’s magna canvases hide and reveal mysteries of life. In recent experiments with glass and resin, interplay of altering light conveys musings on birth, growth, the cycle of life. Hildegard Westerkamp’s soundscape compositions weave a magical world – a stimulating sound-sensorial experience.

Chang-Hoon Woo’s profound paintings delve into the tech-driven tableau of contemporary living. Kavas Kapadia’s delightful cameos of everyday life, rendered in water colours, display spontaneity and refreshing candour. Ramakrishna Vedala’s poetic portrayal of his mother draws out the spirituality and gentleness of her essence through moist, pigment soaked brushstrokes. Prabir Purkyastha’s visions are phantasmagorical journeys to a utopia, which surprisingly is very much our own planet. Naoyuki Ishiga translates his fascination with nature into highly intricate, gossamer, lace-like kiri-e or paper-cuts.  Yours truly’s expression has leapfrogged by being orphaned, emerging anew to explore the matrix of the metaphysical.
